For those of you who've read Doc Doom's origin from the classic Lee/Kirby FF Annual #2; have you ever noticed that the college Dean who invites Doom to study in America is not the same one who expels him? Perhaps the Dean that appeared before Doom and invited him was actually Mephisto in disguise, wanting to screw Vic's life up a lot more (Owning his mother's soul was not enough). Perhaps it was even Loki, playing a wicked prank on Doom.

It would make a GREAT story. (Mark Waid, are you reading this?)

Don't colleges have more than one dean? Dean of Students, Dean of Admissions, etc.

But, yeah, done right, this could be an interesting retcon.

Well, if you read the preview dot comic at the Marvel web site, it is not a dean that comes recruiting for a young Victor von Doom. It is some top brass from the U.S. Military who tells him he can have one of several scholarships provided he came to America. I think this is a far more plausible 'ret-con'. It makes sense that someone who could dream up such sophisticated weaponry with very little resources would stir up interest in those quarters. Then when Victor did not come through for them and pursued his own agenda instead when he created the device that caused the accident, they kicked him out. Probably figured he would be difficult to control.

But why would Mephisto or Loki want Doom to study in America? State University is not a college of magic, and young Victor appears to have gone there to study science. His continued dabbling in magic seems to have been against university rules. Wouldn't it have made more sense from Mephisto's or Loki's point of view to send a monk from that weird monastery in the Himalaya to Doom? Also, are deans elected for life? By the time Doom had his accident, a successor to the original dean of science could have been elected. Or the guy who expelled him (a white-haired, elderly man) could actually have been the president of State University.

So? I don't see a problem with this.

I saw the fallout from it, but not the actions. Can't judge on this.
