Maybe I need to re-read it (actually, scratch that. I do need to re-read it) but...

This new issue kinda threw me. First, the Military guy said that Cap compromised his anonymity for the sake of a moral gesture. Got that. Agreed. It was stupid.

Then he says that he's compromised his usefulness to us. Uh, why? Because the world didn't think there was a real man behind the mask? Not likely. Because he's more likely to be killed by a terrorist sniper as he walks to his house at night? Possibly although spending the rest of the issue trying to kill him because someone's got a new angle on killing him seems odd.

'If he's alive, Colonel Fury. And that's a bigger IF than it used to be. So, let's kill him ourselves so they won't get a chance to do so. Never mind that people have been trying to kill him for 50 years and barely ever came close.'

This is pretty bad. Rieber has all but said that we'll find that SHIELD or the US government or both armed the terrorists in some oh so obvious bit of real world parallelism but I don't know what they suspect Cap will do with that information. Take down SHIELD? Attack the White House?

Is there something I'm missing here? This story seems like a bit of a mess.

Oh, and one more thing:

Keeping in line with the NuMarvel stance that superheroes are silly things to be scoffed at or made fun of, Reiber gives us this little bit:

'Joel, Joel, look

<<Yeah, and if you had that super soldier serum running through your veins and you'd had years of combat experience and an adamantium shield and Avengers clearance and SHIELD tech and Avenger friends and...

...all the other things that he's not supposed to have to fit the everyman version of the character they're trying to sell us on.>>

Where is it stated he does not have these things anymore? Not in any of the issues I've read.

That whooshing sound you hear overhead is an Should-Have-Been Identified Sarcastic Object.

Or it could be the dying wail of what is apparently supposed to be a hysterically witty smart-ass observation, had it not played like a pointless non-sequitor.

Funny, all I can hear is someone else's bitter resentment at not getting a sarcastic joke. .

I gave up on it when someone asked me what happened, and I realized that they spent half the book arguing over whether or not to let Cap into a briefing room.

Wouldn't people have questioed Steve Rogers being 70 years old in a 20 year old body. He did fight in world war 2.

This is the difference between Cap and Bendis' 'Daredevil.' When Bendis spends an entire book dwelling on a conversation between a few cops, at least you'll get some good dialog and character development out of it. I'm not sure what the hell I got out of Cap. It went by too fast.

Funny, all I can hear is someone desperately trying to save face after said 'joke' bombed worse than Hiroshima ...

Well, presumably everyone either already accepts that Captain America is eternally young, or they assume it's a different man in the costume. I don't see how Steve unmasking affects that.
