I haven't seen the Daredevil movie yet, but I collected Daredevil (the comic) years ago.
I'm sure the movie will cause at least a few more people to sample the comic. I'm curious myself how Daredevil stacks up these days.
There are no comic shops near me and I pre-order. I'm thinking of giving the series a try but I thought I would test the waters a bit first.

It depends really. Matt in costume is a little unusual these days, but what Bendis has been doing with the series is really good. I wrote a review for the last two issues which you can fine at http://www.comicsnsuch.com if you'd like to read them. I'd really recommend the series though. It's

It's one of my favourite comics at the moment. The last 35 or so issues have been collected in various tpbs. All the Bendis ones are really good but be warned it's not all costumed fight scenes like you may remember...

There aren't many, but it's nonsense to claim that there aren't any.
If your priority is to read engaging, extremely character-driven stories about Daredevil, you'll be happy with the book. If your priority is to see Matt Murdock in a red costume, you won't.

Matt Murdock IS Daredevil. That fact has been playing a very substantial role during Bendis's stint

Could someone please give me a rundown of the more recent DD trades? Where would be a good starting point? Is there a good jumping on point for the ongoing series? I believe I saw an ad for a 25 or 35-cent issue

Depends. If his dual identity is a crucial element of the story, as is currently the case in books like INCREDIBLE HULK or DAREDEVIL, I don't see why it should be a problem.
I'd be pretty surprised if there wasn't a good number of such Batman stories out there already, actually.
: How interesting : would X-Men be if they sat around the mansion 95% of the time talking : about stuff?
There are heaps of just such X-Men stories, and not few of them are widely regarded as being among the best the series has to offer.
: Do you think the Fantastic Four would still be around if, : during the first two years of their existence, all they did was stand : around and talk?
Again, if the 'talk' is interesting and has something to do with the concept, why on earth not? Where does it say that every superhero story has to include spandex and property damage? Whatever happened to characterization, tension and drama as primary motivations to read a comic?
: Why read about superheroes when the superhero isn't : involved with the title? What is so inherently interesting about Matt : Murdock that an entire comic can be written about him and his love : life?
Again, none of the recent arcs would work if Murdock wasn't Daredevil. The superhero IS involved in the title

The 25 cent issue shipping just before the movie came out. (The 25 cent X-Men will ship just after the movie comes out, which makes more sense to me.)
As for the trades, I haven't been reading the new ones (although they're high on my list of temptations,) but the Brian Michael Bendis and Frank Miller volumes are numbered. The titles relaunched with Kevin Smith's set, so a good sequence might be: 1) Daredevil Visionaries: Kevin Smith 2) Daredevil: Parts of a Hole 3-8) Brian Michael Bendis' numbered volumes, simply labelled 'Daredevil Vol. #: <story arc>', for example, 'Daredevil Vol. 5: Out.'
I think this will get you every issue since the relaunch, in sequence, with the exception of a fill-in issue. (Most of the posts I've read here seem to indicate that's no great loss.)
