It just seems to me that a US government that does what the government did in Avengers Red Zone, I'll try to avoid specific spoilers, wouldn't be the sort that would allow a despot like Dr. Doom. who has frequently tried to take over the world and often launches attacks on American citizens to just sit quietly in Latveria until he decided to atack next time.

Yes it does, and the reason is artistic licence really. Kangs attack in Avengers was ignored by the X-verse, and the rest of the world pretty much ignored the alien invasion in X-treme X-Men.
It just makes life simpler for the writers who don't want to limit the scale of their own story by involving four hundred other heroes.

Yes, it does, it's just up to the writer of a given title whether they want to acknowledge events going on in other titles.

The Vorta Usenet Archive revealed that in message
broadcast the following anti-Dominion propaganda:
If I remember correctly, Madripoor was cut off, preventing the aliens from leaving and any more of Earth's forces from attacking the invaders - which is why Sage boosted Rogue's powers so she could fight them off on her own.
As soon as the invasion was averted, the Avengers arrived and began helping in the clean up operations. Captain America and Iron Man are seen taking Rogue and Gambit to a field hospital, and Cap vouches for them.

This is incorrect as it is wayyyy beyond simply 'not acknowleging events'. The current siruation, which has been repeated constantly (Amazing Spider-Man, Spec Sider-Man, Hulk, Daredevil, etc.), is that titles contradicts each other, character growth is ignored or we are given characters we don't recognize, or major circumstances are not only not acknowledged, but ignored completely.
I never considered myself a continuity freak and don't consider it a priority if a good story is turned out, but I'm seeing mediocre stories given to us that are so far removed from what the characters involed that it doesn't seem to contain the characters that I know. Many like the new direction and that is fine, but to say that continuity is around and some events are merely not acknowledged in not correct.

Absolutely. There's a world of difference between 'ignoring continuity for the sake of a good story' and 'being too lazy to do the damn research.'

Amen. Please inform the powers that be at marvel of this enlightening piece of information, as well as howard mackie and others who think continuity only makes comics get messy.

Don't really see a problem with this. There are still the odd crossovers. I don't mind if say, in X-Men, they don't say 'Oh geez look Kangs invaded earth. I'd go help if I didn't have to train today'.
In the 1960's. The world's changed just a tad since then.
