One for the old-school Thunderbolts fans to look out for.
An ongoing Hawkeye series, written by Fabian Nicieza, starting October. Art by Stefano Rafaele, who's illustrating Nicieza's series Blackburne Covenant at Dark Horse.
Well, you can't say they didn't listen to the backlash...

I don't see how this is a lock for old-school fans. Do you honestly see this hiring as an admittance of defeat? Jemas is still in charge of Marvel and he has made it clear that those who do not write padded, dialogue-heavy, story-lite, six part arcs without action, suspense or costumed super-villains need not apply. From what I've seen, it's just another case of the writer changing his style to please the new-school suits. I would love to be proven wrong, though, but somehow I doubt this series' solicitations will focus on the adventures of Hawkeye versus Crossfire, Trickshot and the Grey Gargoyle. Instead we'll get six issue arcs about the moody brooding of Clint Barton the shifty drifter who is good with a bow and arrow but never wears his costume outside the carnival fairgrounds. I can see it now -
Hawkeye 1 'Opening Act - part 1 of 6' Clint Barton has just arrived in Shoebox Junction, a quiet town - at least it was before Murphy Dawkins was elected mayor. But will Clint fight city hall and lose? We guarantee you'll know by the time you've spent your eighteenth dollar on this series!

I enjoyed Nicieza's short-lived series 'Nomad'; at least I think that was his book. Also I liked the original artist on that book too, I think he'd draw a cool Hawkeye.

I highly doubt Hawkeye can support his own series.

Of course. You've utterly defeated them, and Fabian should probably send you a thousand flowers for this great opportunity you've given him.
: From what I've seen, it's just another case of the writer : changing his style to please the new-school suits.
If you were familiar with 'the writer's' work, you'd know that he doesn't have to 'change his style' to 'please' anybody at all. He just needed to remind Marvel that he is (and has always been) capable of writing a different sort of stories than the one he is mainly associated with nowadays. (I suggest you track down a few copies of Fabian's NOMAD to get an idea of what I'm talking about.)
I'm glad that it worked.

Maybe I'm just too narrow-minded, but I consider solid characterization and engaging stories to be the most important thing about a comic.

What, no Kurt Busiek...?
Congrats, Fabian Nicieza

Where are you finding those engaging stories month-in, month-out? JMS's Spider-man, Spider-girl or the Future comic book Deathmask, maybe the Disney books? Those are the only places where you can honestly expect your 2.25-2.99 get you a complete, satisfying and interesting 22 pages of actual plot development mixed with the 'solid characterization.'.

WOLVERINE, QUEEN & COUNTRY, NEW X-MEN, X-STATIX, DAREDEVIL, ALIAS, POWERS, STORMWATCH, WILDCATS VERSION 3.0, BLACK PANTHER, CREW, Y: THE LAST MAN, THE FILTH, THE PUNISHER and CAPTAIN MARVEL, among others.
THE ULTIMATES, THREE STRIKES, PLANETARY and ASTRO CITY: LOCAL HEROES have also been very good, but don't come out monthly.

Not really. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, while being a solid and competent book, lacks original ideas and an interesting supporting cast. I tried SPIDER-GIRL and it didn't interest me enough to keep buying it. The Future books, from what I've heard, don't even interest me enough to try them: Some eighties Marvel books were pretty good, but that doesn't mean I need cover versions of them in the year 2003.

No, those are just the places where YOU can expect these things.
