Universal's worst nightmares have come to pass, as the hulk dropped over 70% from last weekend, pulling in only and estimated $18.2 million in it's second weekend of release. In total the Hulk has brought in just over $100 million 11 days. The 70% decline in box office proceeds are higher than average for a major motion picture, which ordinarily would decline 40-50% in it's second weekend after release. The gargantuan decline is as large as the movie is itself and portends doom for the long term profitability of this movie. On the upside, the Hulk has surpassed the $100 million mark, but even doubters to last weeks reports of less than anticipated proceeds will be forced to admit that the Hulk may not be the box office hit Marvel and Universal had hoped it was going to be.

I'm taking bets now from all you nonbelievers that there will be a Hulk sequel and that the current grosses won't have the slightest effect on it.

Look, I'm as gung-ho a 'Hulk' movie booster as anyone, but the second-weekend drop-off is terrible. I'm betting on no 'Hulk' sequel anytime

Even scarier than HULK's drop-off is the report that CHARLIE'S ANGELS II: FULL THROTTLE did WORSE opening weekend than the original when the gospel according to Hollywood was that sequels always do better than the original.

I'm not betting yet. As I've said before, I expected a big second week drop-off (although I only expected 50-60%) because the movie Universal advertised is not the movie Ang Lee created. I think the third-and-future week drop-offs will actually be fairly small, letting the movie last longer at a lower income than you'd expect from this result. It won't turn a significant profit until the DVD release, but it won't bomb in theaters.

3 years tops. There'll be another Hulk movie. If you doubt it then you don't know Hollywood.

Why are you so stupid? That's just the way it is, for both questions.

They'll assume the drop-off from Friday to Friday is the same. That'll make it a pretty good guesstimate. When I worked at a theater, we reported our income numbers nightly so the studios could get the results the next day.

I get the impression that they expected 'Crouching Tiger' without the subtitles, forgetting that by Hong Kong standards, it is slow (not in a bad way) and character driven. Then they got 'The Hulk,' which, in fact, *is* 'Crouching Tiger' without the subtitles, and suddenly realized that wasn't what they wanted at all.
