The Spider-Man comic adaptation stunk to high heaven- except for the art. Stan Lee's talent died long ago.

Eh, I wouldn't really blame Stan. He did the best with what he had - the problem with all comic book adaptations is, there's just not enough room in one 48 page book to properly do the movie justice.

Chris (not least of all when Ralph 'Let's have the characters constantly narrate their surroundings' Macchio is writing them, as he so often does...)

I would. I also blame Marvel management. They should never have allowed him to write such a high profile book after the abortion that was the 'Stan Lee Imagines...' series from DC. That proved right there that the guy had nothing left in the tank, talent wise.

Very few adaptations are good. But you're really screwing yourself when you put a no talent hack in charge of it.
