I think Steranko's History of Comics, Vol 2 had some pretty good summaries of William Gaines' use of SSL in the EC horror and crime books.

For primary open source material, check out the Kitchen Sink hardbound reprints. The entire run of Tales of the Encryption is, IIRC included in Vols 3,4 and 5.

I thought the bit where it was revealed that SSL stood for the Suicide Squid Layer was interesting, given Gaines' previous work on the character.
