I'm considering collecting the Marvel Masterworks editions. I'd not only like to read them, but display them on the shelves of my library. What keeps me from diving in is this: Marvel has changed the formats several times since they started publishing them, and I would not be happy if they went through YET ANOTHER change after I've plunked down a substantial amount of money. I'd like to have a collection that is uniform in appearance. Does this latest format appear to be one that they can stick with, or will we be seeing others in the future?

I desperately hope that this latest format will stick and Marvel will make a long term commitment to the Masterworks series (like what DC has done with their Archives line). I've got all the original volumes in the Masterworks series and am going to buy any previously unreleased additions. My bookshelf looks a bit chaotic (27 original dustjackets, 4 comicraft dustjackets, and 1 'new' dustjacket). I don't mind the chaos as long as I can keep adding new editions.

Hopefully Marvel can make this stuff profitable and get the entire 'Marvel age of comics' in sturdy, hardcover format. Based on the Sub Mariner volume, I also hope they can improve the product and use better paper stock. DC archives wins the raw materials battle, but I'm really partial to silver age marvel characters and stories.

On a similar note, Marvel zapped Essential collectors as well, changing formats about half way in. The new format is superior, in my humble opinion, but now my bookshelf look is shot to crap. With the Masterworks, it would be great if Marvel *offered* to sell just dustjackets for the older volumes, for say $3 - $5 so owners could have a nice looking bookshelf. For Essential owners, no such option.
