...the different versions, that is. Specifically, exactly when and how did Classic Hulk become Grey Hulk, then Intelligent Green Hulk? PAD left because he was ordered to bring back Classic Hulk right? But isn't Hulk intelligent again right now?

Well, I can give you the chronology, but the 'how' is a bit too complicated:
Hulk was gray and mean in his first appearance, green and mean through the remainder of his first series and the first Avengers arc, classic 'Hulk Smash' until about issue 270, then had Banner's mind until 300, then was savage and mindless until about 323, where he was gray and mean again.
Then, gray for a while, until briefly the 'Hulk smash' and gray Hulks coexisted until 377, when the merged 'Professor' Hulk emerged and stayed until the 450s or so. Then

Pretty good description, all told. The only thing I'd add is that the reason the Hulk was made green in the second issue was because Marvel's printers couldn't get the gray consistent in the
