Punisher Quesions

Okay, I'm into Batman, but the other day me and a friend was talking about the Punisher as we have seen him in the SPiderman cartoon, played the old atari st game and film For a suprise my gf brought me a load of Punisher from ebay, they are mostly vol 3 and vol4. Can some one tell me why they are in volumes, does it go to 1 then start at one again? or has it been cancelled and then re started a few times? Any help would be great.

It's been cancelled a few times and restarted. When Marvel puts out a new #1 with the same name it goes up in volume.

This is going off memory and I'm not much of a punisher fan.

There was the original mini from the late 80's.

There was the original series (v1) which ended in the 100's (along with Punisher War Journal and Punisher War Zone), I never read this.

V2 was about him running the Mafia or some such, I never read it.

Then there was the Marvel Knights mini about Frank coming back to life after commiting suicide and working for Heaven by Christopher Golden. Personally I enjoyed it but a lot of people hated this one.

V3 (according to the the TPB so I guess for Punisher they aren't counting minis) is the maxi series by Garth Ennis. This was excellent and worth anyone's time to pick it up.

V4 is the current series by Ennis. As above for the first 4 or so issues which was a sequel of sorts to the Maxi. I've only got the first two trades so I can't speak for a lot of this series.

Except according to my TPB of Ennis' maxi it's labelled as V3.

Thats a bit odd, my gf won vol 4 17-19, is this something else then.

What about the first Marvel Knights mini.

Although initially labelled as volume 3, that mini was officially titled 'The Punisher: Purgatory'. So that is a volume 1, and Ennis' maxi became volume 3.
