Does anyone know the cover artist(s) for SUB-MARINER #59? I've seen Bill Everett credited for it at least one place on-line, but I'm almost positive that's incorrect. It's very clearly not his style.
Any thoughts?
Thanks for your help!

the nigh-lengendary Kurt Busiek sez...
It's not his usual approach to texture, but he experimented a lot

That's what I was thinking. But, the concensus does seem to be Bill Everett on pencils and inks for Sub-Mariner #59.
Thank you both very much for responding!

Okay, let me throw a monkey wrench in here...to me, it really looks like early-period Jim Starlin pencils with Everett inks and Romita touch-ups.

Roy Thomas talks about this in ALTER EGO. Briefly, Everett was unhappy that Andru's pencils didn't offer single, clear contour lines to render, but instead included many strokes. He wanted a more precise job to ink from, but Marvel wasn't going to send the job back to Andru for tightening up, so Everett inked every line that was there, That resulted in in a sketchy, spontaneous look that I liked a lot. I guess he thought he was proving a point, Stan was not pleased.
Thomas goes on to say that they didn't give Everett any more Andru jobs to ink, but he misremembers, since Everett inked the third Defenders tryout, too.

I concur. I love that piece, it's one of my favorite Everett ink jobs. If memory serves, he used it at a lesser degree on the next DEFENDERS covers (I have this dim memory of Xemnu inked that way - or was it on the story inside, over Andru's artwork? I have to dive into my collection and read that stuff again soon).

Okay, so that's the one I just mentioned I remembered, with Xemnu. They should have kept Andru and Everett together: that look was brilliant, even if it appears to be a complete accident! ^

Looking at the positioning of the two figures, and especially the anatomy of Subby's extended legs with the rather distinctive musculature (heavy thighs and thin ankles that Starlin did back then), that's a damned good call!

Wow, I didn't expect this to get so much discussion! Thanks, guys!
I'm taking a closer look at #59 and I think I can see more Everett in it now. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Namor's stomach, belt and trunks, and Thor's hair seems more in line with Everett's style during his previous Sub-Mariner issues. I didn't know that he had been experimenting with his style, so thank you for that.
Forgive me if I'm not following along correctly. Are some of you saying that it could be Ross Andru's pencils with Bill Everett's inks on Sub-Mariner #59's cover? Unfortunately, I'm not terribly familiar with Andru's style, yet.
And since we're on the topic of creators working on Sub-Mariner #59, who is 'Stan G.'? He's credited as the issue's colorist.
Again, thank you for taking the time,
