If you've ever been curious the real reason why Thanos was defeated by Kazar so ridiculously, and why he sometimes acts like a deranged psychotic moron for no apparent reason, you should pick up the latest Infinity Abyss. Starlin's explanation is really rather clever. Dr Doom pulled the same trick in the eighties IIRC

SPOILERS

Basically, it's the old 'Everyone else's version of the character was just a clone so the story doesn't really count' retcon.

The Ka-Zar appearance, the recent Thor storyline and Avengers: Celestial Quest are all rather brutally eliminated from Thanos' continuity in the space of two panels.

Well, considering that in Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos pretty much was spurned by Death and more or less gave up his quest for total nihilism afterwards, and these other guys pretty much screwed things up

That's okay, because Kazar was just a robot built by Reed Ricxhards in that story anyway.

Which is rather unfortunate, considering that I remember at least the KA-ZAR story to be much better than anything I've seen in INFINITY ABYSS so far.

rose up with the following chant:

I liked Peter David's explanation in the Captain Marvel comic better.

Peter David didn't have Thanos blame anyone else (especially not clones) for his past actions. Thanos basically said, he was experimenting on Thor and Ka-Zar in preparation for a major battle, and his actions make different sense at different times, just like (for example) Thor himself, who hangs out with Vikings one millenium and with superheroes the next.

Not saying it isn't.

I'd say it's a device best used sparingly, though. Doesn't look good if stories are regularly kicked out of continuity within months of
