What was this? As far as I know it was a 25 part stoy but thats all. Someones selling it for £5 all issues which sounds like a good deal.

This was a Peter Sanderson project published by Marvel basically telling, in chronological order, the history of the early Marvel universe. It's not told in comic book style, but with text captions and a few relevent panels from each story discussed. IIRC, it ends with FF #50 (the end of the story arc introducing Galactus).

It's not just a summary of all those great Silver Age Marvel comics, though, as it included significant retcons placed in that period, such as what was known of Wolverine's origin at the time. Most stories are summed up in sentence or three. It was a nice reference for fans who couldn't afford the original issues. The Essentials have reduced the need for this comic, but they're still good for a cheap overview.

he fun was that it was supposed to tell each story in in chronological order and to only use panels from the stories involved, so, for example, the retelling of Doctor Doom's history had Byrne and Kirby's work right next to each other, and fitting together in a seamless tale.

Of course, they pretty soon had to include specially commissioned material to make everything fit together ...

The thing that ticked me off about the series at the time was how it veered away from covering everybody at the end of its run (stopping at the end of 1965 for everyone except the FF). Must have trying to cram in FF 48-50 before the series was cancelled, though there was the one issue which traced Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson's relationship up to their wedding.

A few other odd bits through the series...

* This may have been the last time HULK #1 was reprinted with the colouring 'corrected' to green * New Thor art by Walt Simonson

Overall, not a bad introductory primer, even if some of the continuity is outdated. The series that really hooked me into the 60s gems.

It ended just as the Silver Surfer series was starting. It sure looked like they were trying to help launch the Surfer's book.
