One letter and 4 words, to be brief: J. Michael Straczynski Gary Frank.
Not too shabby.....

Here I was thinking I was losing interest in comics, I've about dropped every book.
Just when I think I'm out, they pull me back in!

I dunno, I don't think this is going to work. I read one of the follow-up posts that expressed concern over Gary Frank's comments concerning not wanting to really do costumed super-heroes and making it more 'real world' (a term that Marvel is beating to death along with most of their creations), and I'm going to be really skeptical about this one. Squadron was never real world. It was initially a take-off on archetypal super-heroes, that eventually developed an identity of their own in their maxi-series without losing their costumed super-hero motif. Personally, it sounds like Marvel's about to ruin another

Noooo...the Squadron Supreme Limited Series WAS 'superheroes in the real world'. It just had a different definition than what it does now, and I think maybe JMS heard the term applied to it and misunderstood. 'Superheroes in the real world' as applies to Squadron Supreme was a reflection of time, not reality. It moved in the same time as the 'real world'...every issue took place 30 days after the last. Now that is something I personally would be interested in reading on an ongoing basis... The other definition is something that is very tired and overdone.

It was real world insamuch as it made the perfectly valid point that those with superpowers might see it as their duty to 'improve' the world for all, rather than keeping fiighting villians and causing collateral damage with no real long term benefit. The fact it required a dictatorship to manage it was also a very valid point. Benevolent yes, but still a dictatorship.
The closest mainstream Marvel came to that was 'The Death of Captain Marvel' where the worlds foremost superminds came together to try and find a cure for cancer, a cure they seemingly developed, but of couirse were so obsessed about trying to cure Mar-Vell that they completely forgot everything about it immediately afterwards.

Still managed to maintain the traditional 'costumed super-hero' motif. I'm trying to picture Hyperion in a black leather uniform stolen from the X-Men's closet or something. Ugh. No thank you.
