I don't know if this is still in the rumour stage, or an official announcement that the next Ultimate comic will be the hulk, so excuse me if this is dumb... At the end of the 'return of the king' story arc in Ultimate x-men, magneto mentions that the ultimates keep the hulk in a cell just like his. does this mean the hulk already exists in the ultimate universe (I haven't been reading the ultimates, so if the answer's obvious, just say). If not, how will they work around the fact he's already been mentioned, when the premise of the ultimate series is to start a character's story from scratch. so we would expect his creation in Ultimate Hulk #1. again, sorry if I'm being really dumb...

Not dumb, just magnificently uninformed. Hulk's been around in the Ultimate universe since 'The Ultimates' was first published.

Sorry, knew there'd be an easy answer. I've only been reading Ultimate X-men, so I never came across him.

Actually, he appeared in Ultimate Marvel Team-Up before that. It was even referenced in Ultimates. Unless I'm mistaken, he was green in Team-Up and then gray in Ultimates.

Before the Ultimates was published actually. He had a two parter in Ultimate Marvel Team-Up if I remember correctly.

Issues 3 and 4, to be exact. That rampage is referenced in the second issue of 'The Ultimates,' but as others have pointed out, some of the other details (like his skin colour as Hulk) have been retconned already.

Actually, it was issues 2 and 3.
No, nothing was retconned. The green Hulk from Ultimate Team-Up was created when Dr. Banner tested the new super soldier formula he was trying to create on himself. His formula failed and turned him into the green Hulk instead of a new Captain America as he intended. Eventually, this formula wore off and there were no traces of it remaining in Banner.
Later, after the original Cap was found frozen, Banner took a sample of Cap's blood and mixed it with his Hulk formula. He then took this new hybrid formula and became the grey Hulk. Nothing was retconned. The green and grey Hulks resulted from different formulas. This was all revealed in the early issues of the Ultimates.
