What's the big deal? What's the interest here?

Don't worry, there will be many more comic book movies WHatever the Hulk does. Don't worry, based on what I'm seeing in the stores - the MASSIVE marketing exploitation of the film, they will make more money on underoos, cereal,DVD's, Videos, Comics, books, toys, fruit snacks, re-releases of inane 1980's TV movies and icicle pops etc than on the movie. Is anyone going to tally all that up for us? What the heck is the difference? Will there be a sequel? Maybe. Will you drop dead if there isn't?

What's the big deal?

Because the movie was expected to be a smash hit, collecting anywhere from $200-300 million. If it had done that well I don't think the coverage would have been anywhere near the level it is now. However, the movie hasn't been anywhere near as successful as it was expected to be, which is news worthy. But even that has ebbed after three straight weeks. I know that Newsarama ran with a short article regarding last weekends dissapointing numbers, but I don't believe anyone else did. I know I didn't because it just felt too much like kicking a dead horse by that point.

80% of Marvel's income comes from licensing their characters out. The success of their films has a huge impact on their profitability each year. It has knock-on effects across the board.

I think there is more doubt now that there will be a sequal, than there was after the first weekend. But I still think there will be at least one sequal. Unfortunately I think a potential sequal will focus more on the 'Hulk Smash' aspect of the character, than characterization and character development.

Isn't that normally how things work? First movie is characterization and developement and the second movie is all action. Kinda like Lord of the Rings.

Normally, yes. But I think Ang Lee was forced to cut too many corners in the character development department. Peter David did a better job of it in the novelization, and in my review of the movie I mentioned one scene in particular that I had really hoped would make it into the movie

The blockbusters are just too thick on the ground this summer. The box office may have become front-loaded, but a movie still needs some room to breathe

Typo. That should read 'top of July', not 'top of June'. The top of June was actually relatively sedate and gave FINDING NEMO a chance to gather box office.

The movie ads running in my paper have a big picture of Connery, several glowing quotes, and then a small row of pictures of the rest, captioned either with their character names (if they're recognizable, like Tom Sawyer and Captain Nemo) or their descriptions (if they're not, like 'an invisible man' or 'Dracula's Bride'. I think they've solved that problem nicely that way.

No. That was one of the copyright fears, I think.

I enjoyed it myself, as we've been discussing over in rac.misc, where LoEG is on-topic. Followups set.

:> adaptation.

all the trailers in our area showed scenes with both hyde and invisible man.

local critic review suggested that a better story and better selection of fictional characters would have made the movie interesting...
