Over the years I've developed a mental list of writer's i just wont buy any of their stuff. For example - J M DeMatteis because he puts the same boring New Age Mysticism in every book. Judd Winnick because I can't get over the incredible wimpiness when he appeared on MTV's Real World.

What are some of your writer's you won't buy and don't forget to put the

Wow, these 2 guys are in my Top 20 as far as writers (JM in my Top 5). Both have put out stuff that I haven't cared for, but when they are on, their characterization skills are unbeatable. JM did some of the most memorable Spider-Man stories ever and Judd's Pedro and Me as well as his first year on Green Lantern were very works, IMO.

I'm actually a big fan of Peter David's writing, but I can't stand the thought of buying more of his work (I had the chance to buy an Aquaman run for cheap, but I passed it up).

I'll provide two reasons: one, he looks like the Violator in human form (c'mon...); two, he uses the same irreverent humor style in everything he writes. So the Hulk winds up sounding the same as all the X-Factor characters, and vice versa.

Don't get me wrong, I just listed two of my favorite comic runs.... But I don't think I'd get more.

Well, I refuse to buy work from any writer who has a substandard understanding of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Anyone who calls themselves a writer and has work loaded with mistakes of that nature can't be called a writer any more than a guy who doesn't know what a hammer is for being called a carpenter.

And the fact is, the editors are getting worse, because more of these mistakes are making it to print.

I don't care if someone's a wimp as long as they can write good copy, period. If they can weave a story I can dig, whether or not they're a wimp is secondary. On the other hand, if I find recurrent themes in someone's work to be something I disagree with I wouldn't buy that.

He didn't always do that. His Justice League and Spectacular Spidey (toward its end) runs were quite devoid of that.

I'm not reading Green Arrow, and his GL was generally okay but nothing great overall, but Exiles was fun.

Chuck Austen's becoming a guy I don't want to read (though I do want to check out Superman: Metropolis, which some people I trust consider to be his best book; and because of that I'm not dreading as much his appointment to writing Action Comics as many others are).

Anyone else? Not really. Only guy that comes to mind is Joe Kelly. A nice guy (met him and talked with him at San Diego this year), don't get me wrong.....but his works are VERY on and off with me. When he's good (Deadpool, a few of his earlier Action Comics, and pretty much the first issue or 2 of a major storyarc in any title of his), he's good; when he's not (JLA, X-Men, and pretty much the concluding chapter(s) of a major storyarc in any title of his), he's not. Currently, he doesn't write anything I'd want to read; last I read of his was his Zod storyarc in Action and, like all storyarcs he seems to be a part of, it started off GREAT but was a muddled and confusing mess by the end.

Grant Morrison. I know I know an old horse but you asked. I suppose he's not bad per se (excpet his run on the Flash) but his work on JLA and New Xmen has just been uninspired. KIt gets the job done but for books of that caliber I want more.

Mark Millar. The poor mans Grant Morrison. Why he keeps getting work I don't know. THe only thing of his I've been able to stand is Ultimate Xmen and I recently dropped that.

Garth Ennis. I know others will disagree with me but he's always struck me as the jerry Springer of comics writing. If I want a freak show fine. Most of the time I don't.

Well, Straczynski is *vastly* over-rated. Can't stand his stuff. Don't know why anyone reads it. Total crap.

I recently violated this rule and found out why I had the rule to begin with. Garth Ennis. He is a one trick pony whose one trick essentially is sadistic humor.

I'm going to have to agree that the British Mafia is notoriously split for me...guys like Morrison and Millar seem to enjoy a level of glacial pacing that just doesn't justify the cost.

On the converse, I've always enjoyed Paul Jenkins, Mike Carey, Neil Gaiman, or the Moores. I suppose it's a difference between the really crazy bastards and the one's who are not.

Well, if you check http://www.bureau42.com next Wednesday evening, I'll have a review of the first issue of 'Supreme Power' up. That should explain my opinions of his work in sufficient detail.

You could always just search through the site and get my reviews of the first two seasons of 'Babylon 5' there, too. You'll also find a review of his issue 50 of 'Amazing Spider-Man,' and there will be a review of issue 500 when it ships. I plan to pick up the rest of his Spider-Man run in trade paperbacks at some point, too.
