I recently got back into Uncanny after being away for 9 years. Lots has changed. I'm interested in the destruction of Megneto and Genosha. In brief, what happened and what issues (of what ever series) does this happen in?

New X-Men 114-116, collected in NEW X-MEN: E FOR EVOLUTION.

In short, a villain, Cassandra Nova, got herself in charge of the Sentinels via a Trask relative (a dental hygenist), and used them to wipe out Genosha. She was a sort of Dark Other to Professor X (full details in the story), and her tunnel vision was such that her only goal was to mess with his Dream, the deaths of a few million people being neither here nor there.

They've had a lot of help along this route (mutant exceptionalism) by Mother Nature, as well, considering that humanity is scheduled to die out within 5 generations.
